Salt is one among the major sources of sodium in our diet. Sodium is required to regulate blood volume and blood pressure. Increased sodium levels in the blood can lead to an elevation in the blood pressure.

Salt sensitivity is a measure of how your blood pressure responds to salt intake. Certain people who are salt sensitive are at a higher risk for high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and lower survival rate in life if they do not keep a check on their daily salt intake.

Genes encodes for Angiotensinogen, a protein that causes sodium retention in the body. Individuals who carry a specific mutation in this gene are more salt sensitive than others who don’t carry the mutation. Therefore, for such individuals it is essential to limit their dietary salt intake in order to avoid water retention in cells (which leads to ‘pseudo weight gain’) and the risk of other health conditions like hypertension.
