  • India is the second largest producer of sugar and the world’s largest consumer of sugar.
  • The recommended average consumption of sugar per day is 36 grams (9 teaspoons) for men and 24 grams (6 teaspoons) for women. One can of coke contains 39 grams of sugar, more than the amount recommended for the entire day.
  • People consume over 500 extra calories per day from sugar, which is equal to the amount of calories needed to gain one kg in just two weeks.
  • The current level of sugar consumption in India is about 20 kg per year, which is projected to increase significantly in the coming years.
  • A study conducted in 2013 estimated that 180,000 deaths worldwide are linked to sugar consumption and its associated diseases.

  • Sugar- The sweet killer: It is a key driver of obesity and type 2 diabetes. A study reported in LANCET states that by regular consumption of sugar there is a whopping 60% increased risk for obesity in children and adults. Studies have linked sugar consumption with a series of health conditions such as hypertension, high cholesterol, CVD, arthritis, liver diseases and cancer.
  • Premature ageing: Too much of sugar consumption leads to premature ageing. It causes wrinkles via glycation, which is a process triggered by excessive binding of blood glucose to the collagen fibres of the skin and thereby reduces its elasticity.
  • Increases sun damage: Sugar deactivates the body’s natural anti-oxidant enzymes leaving the skin more vulnerable to sun damage.
  • Mood swings: Researchers found that people who consume 2.5 cans of sugary soda per day are three times more likely to be depressed and anxious than those who drink less sugary drinks.
  • Sugar is addictive: Sugar addiction may be genetic. Studies show that those who had genetic changes in the hormone, called ghrelin consume more sugar and alcohol. And according to brain scans, sugar is as addictive as cocaine.
