You may know your blood type. But, do you know your genotype?

[idea]Most individuals are familiar with their blood type. Blood type is but one small aspect of our body. It turns out there are hundreds of such “types” within the body, ranging from your “physical types-“ meaning, height, hair color, eye color, skin color etc., all the way down to your sensitivity to pain and even your ability to laugh “type”.[/idea]


These “types” are technically known as single nucleotide polymorphisms which indicate the individual to individual difference in the genetic code. Genetic code is the “software” code of the humans (and other animals). This code is made up of biological molecules stringed together in a specific sequence that is unique to every individual in this world. This is why DNA can be used to uniquely identify someone.

The full length of the code is three billion characters and comprises of small sections of code that determine various biological aspects of you. For example, your eye color is determined by a segment of code (gene) called OCA2. Similarly, there are genes regulating all aspects of your body and they work differently in you than in everyone else. For example, a group of people can go to a fast food restaurant and order a meal of burger, fries and drinks. Out of this group, some will not put on weight, nor develop higher cholesterol as a result of the fats in the food. Some will put on weight, some will produce higher cholesterol. You get the point. Our body’s metabolism to the foods that we eat and response to the environment we live in is unique to each one of us. Unless we understand our genotype, we would not know about these unique aspects about ourselves.
